Military Medals and Ribbons

April 2nd, 2009

Military medals and military ribbons recognize the great deeds and accomplishments our servicemen and women have made in the line of duty protecting this country’s freedoms. Such awards are a proud display of the highlights of a serviceman or woman’s career, adding more than color and prestige to the uniform but the very recognition of courage and valor in the defense of this great nation.

There are medals for heroism in the field of battle, the risk of life in non-combat situations, commendation medals, achievement medals and medals awarded for service in a particular military campaign.

The Medal of Honor is by far the highest military award that can be bestowed on an individual. It is traditionally presented by the President of the United States. It is awarded for actions performed gallantry at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in action against the enemy. Due to the nature of the award’s criteria, the medal is usually awarded posthumously. Because of its high status, the medal has special legal protection.

The Soldier’s Medal is awarded to individuals of the United States Army who distinguishes himself or herself through heroism that doesn’t involve actual combat with the enemy. Congress instituted the medal in 1926. It is awarded for risking one’s life to save others. The medal is awarded for actions in peacetime that are greater than would have been justified by the Distinguished Flying Cross if the act had taken place in combat.

The Distinguished Flying Cross is awarded to any member of the armed forces who distinguishes himself or herself supporting operations by heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight, subsequent to November 11, 1918. The medal was first awarded to Charles Lindbergh. President George W. Bush and Senator John McCain have each been recipients of The Distinguished Flying Cross.

Military medals and military ribbons are testaments to the courage and valor our servicemen and women have performed in the line of duty protecting the freedoms of their country. No medal can match their sacrifice, but with the honor bestowed through such awards, at least their courage does not go unappreciated. These medals are more than passing recognition of their actions. Indeed, the medals are often passed down through generations, serving as reminders of the history to which these brave men and women were a part,

Personalized Bowling Equipment

March 24th, 2009

The pros know where to look for the best bowlingballs and how to find great bowling gifts. I had always believed that personalized bowling equipment was expensive and difficult to find. I knew that my bowling alley sold a limited number of items but they cost a lot of money. I saw fellow bowlers with really impressive bowling balls and bags and I was curious as to where they found all of this bowling merchandise. Finally, I asked one of the guys from another team where he had bought his equipment from.

He told me that he purchased all of his bowling equipment from an online retailer. The retailer that he used had been in business for several years. There was a specific brand bowling ball that he had wanted to purchase, but found that it was very expensive. He decided to turn to the computer to do some comparison shopping and was very surprised by the wide selection of merchandise and the significantly lower prices. He gave me the website and told me that I needed to check it out for myself in order to find the best bowlingballs.

I went online and visited the bowling retailer. I was amazed by how much merchandise that they carried. There were hundreds of different bowling balls in various colors and designs. They even offered monogramming and hole drilling, which I had thought would have to be performed in a pro shop. This retailer carried the best bowlingballs that were available for prices that were less than half of other bowling equipment stores. They had the specific brand name ball that I was interested in purchasing for a price that I could easily afford.

I also found a wide selection of great bowling gifts. From bowling bags to shoes all the way down to towels and resin bags, this online retailer carried all of your bowling needs. The prices on everything were also very affordable. After browsing through their merchandise I decided to purchase a pair of bowling shoes for my wife. There was a clearance page that had the shoes and other merchandise offered for a heavily discounted price. I couldn’t pass up such a fantastic deal.

If you are in need of some new bowling equipment but can’t afford to pay top dollar, look online. You will find solutions to all of your bowling needs and some great bowling gifts.

How to Make More Sales

March 7th, 2009

In my opinion, firsthand sales info is always best learned through experience. I didn’t get to go to college. I joined the military right after finishing high school and was stationed away for five years. When I came back from my tour of duty I didn’t have time to go to college. I wanted to get settled down, buy my own house and start a family. I knew that a career in the automotive industry would be my best bet. I took into account my skills and my experience and I decided to enter into the automotive industry.

While I was in active duty I worked as a mechanic for all of our ground team transportation devices. I worked on cars, trucks, tanks, and Humvees all day long. I was especially skilled at working on the Humvees and I gained extensive knowledge of their mechanical composition. They became my favorite transportation vessel to work on and I thoroughly enjoyed my job. I had no idea that I was also building up a wealth of sales info that would come in very handy later on in my life.

When I returned home I looked into working as a mechanic. I scheduled an interview at a local Hummer dealership for a position as a full service mechanic. I was given the job immediately after they reviewed my credentials. While the job and the hours were great, the pay was not enough to cover all of my expenses. I started bartending on the weekends to make up for the difference.

One morning after a long weekend I must’ve looked pretty worn down because one of the salesmen approached me and asked me if I was ok. I explained that I was up late working at the bar and then had to be in for my shift at seven in the morning. He looked at me and said that I could make more money and better use of my skills by becoming a salesman for the dealership.

I started selling the very next week. My mentors at the dealership provided me with all the free sales tips that I could ever need to perform well on the job. After working on them for years, I was familiar with all the models and was very knowledgeable about their performance. In my first week I sold six trucks to customers that were incredibly impressed by my comprehensive knowledge of the truck’s mechanics.

Catching Attention with Good Marketing

February 23rd, 2009

I started working as a waitress at a great little diner that was located a few blocks from the major highway that intersected with our town. This diner had some of the best home-cooked food that I had ever eaten. Everything was made from scratch from the biscuits to the delicious apple pie. Customers raved about our food and how delicious it was.

Our main business was from local residents that had been coming here for years. On the weekends, we were always very busy with locals coming in for some old-fashioned comfort food. There was a steel plant across the street and down a little from the diner and we were constantly waiting on the employees from there. The steel plant had three different shifts and I got used to the regulars that would come in after their shift got out for some coffee and a bite to eat.

The diner had been operating the same way for twenty years, serving up food made with love to the locals. But then there was some bad news, the corporation that owned the steel plant decided that they needed to shut the plant down.

The week after the plant closed business was down by fifty percent. The owners of the diner said that they could only afford to continue to operate for another two months if business didn’t pick up.

We all brainstormed on ways that we could increase business. I suggested some form of advertising. After all, we had some of the best food around. All that we needed to do way to get the customers coming in and we were certain that they would be back. Another waitress came up with the idea that we should rent a billboard advertising our diner somewhere located along the highway. That way all of the motorists passing us right by would know that they were going to miss out on the best home cooked food if they didn’t stop.

The owners were leery about spending that much money on billboard advertising, but after another week of even lower sales they knew that it was their last hope. They spent the last of their money on a billboard placed right before our exit.

And now we have a line out the door of customers. Who would have ever thought that billboard advertising could save our little diner and nearly double our sales? Now we are a regular hang out for truck drivers, travelers, and the locals.

Industrial Robotics Leading the Way

January 27th, 2009

Modern industrial manufacturing demands precision. As products become smaller and smaller and tolerances become ever tighter, precision is more than just a buzz word in the industry. It’s increasingly an every day necessity. Add strict safety code requirements, and absolute precision is simply the only way to do business. Perfection must go beyond the level of human error, achieving a level of consistent quality that only automated robotics can achieve. Industrial robotic technology have come a long way in the last few years. Indeed, they now exhibit a level of consistency and quality control that has made automation increasingly standard in manufacturing.

Robotics are being created to be easily changed and reprogrammed to fit a variety of jobs. Recent improvements in the science of industrial robotic technology have made flexibility a reality, allowing the robot to perform virtually every function required on a manufacturing line. They simplify the production process with uniformity, ensuring that every step of the manufacturing line is performed consistently, without suffering the consequence of human error.

Robots are ideal for a variety of applications, including parts transfer robots, press transfer robots, machine tending robots, and palletizing robotic arm solutions. Automation brings efficiency with surprising results. Some manufacturing lines, for example, experience a 25 percent increase after adding a machine tending robot to their processes.

Vision guided systems allow robots to be reprogrammed to perform a variety of jobs, bringing versatility to the assembly line. Randomly fed components on a conveyer system have specific coordinates the robot is programmed to detect, allowing it to work with a variety of applications and adjust to what the particular job demands. Vision guided systems can also be used as for quality control, using cameras to inspect a particular part to make sure it was manufactured correctly.

In the modern age, the easiest way to cut costs while still boosting production is a switch to automation. Recent developments in technology ensure a level of quality control unmatched with human resources. As products become increasingly smaller, automation becomes the only way to ensure precision on a production line. Robotics are quickly becoming the future, saving costs while guaranteeing a quality that is truly unsurpassed.

Plasma Cutter in Modern Industry

November 23rd, 2008

The plasma cutter is extremely important to modern construction because it relies heavily on the handling and management of metals and alloys. Because of their strength, metals and alloys are used to build roads, bridges and tunnels, in addition to the machinery that these types of jobs require, eg, cranes, excavation equipment and welding equipment.

The funny thing is that metal’s strength is also its Achilles’ heel. Why is this? To explain, metal is extremely proficient at opposing damage. This very trait also makes it difficult to work with, ie, manipulate and shape into specialized parts. This is where the value of the plasma cutter comes in.

A plasma cutter allows a welder, for example to accurately cut and shape metal into whatever they need it to be. For example, if an airplane wing needed to be constructed. A plasma cutter would be used to shape the metal for it.
It would be hard to imagine completing any number of large construction jobs that require metal manipulation without using a plasma cutter. Given this, you may be wondering how the plasma cutter came to be such an integral part of modern industry.

The History of the Plasma Cutter

The plasma cutter is has been around since the second world war, making it a pretty common tool. The need for it arose because during this time, plants and factories in the U.S. were making war necessities, eg, aircraft, armor, etc. at a rapid pace.

Because of the pace at which factories were cranking out these necessities, they were seeking ways to cut and join airplane parts more efficiently. Eventually, a new way of welding was born that led to sturdier, cleaner joint construction. The plasma cutter was an integral tool in this process.

The plasma cutter has literally shaped the world we live in – from the airplanes that fly in the sky to the subways that run beneath modern city streets.

The staying power of the old format

October 7th, 2008

If you’ve ever turned on the tube late at night and tried to find something to lull you back to sleep, chances are you’ve encountered an infomercial. Infomercials are ubiquitous and are notorious for playing on their viewers’ late night judgment, which is often impaired owing to insomnia, sleep deprivation, or any of its causes – depression, anxiety, etc. Consequently, they are often designed to play to peoples’ insecurities – their weight or poor complexion – or else their weakened judgment in discerning just how necessary another ultra absorbent chamois really is.

Lately, however, that’s begun to change. More and more aptly-named “TV entrepreneurs” are hitting cable with products that don’t play on insecurities but rather mimic a real TV format. This new generation of infomercials employs what are more quickly becoming the new standard in infomercial production techniques. Whereas infomercials have historically employed so-called “real studio audiences” or D-list celebrities espousing the merits of a product, infomercials are now often designed to mimic the appearance of a real, late night TV show or good housekeeping show, or even a shopping network’s real regular programming. The result is an increasingly predatory programming lineup in which unsuspecting consumers are the targets of massive misrepresentation.

Thankfully, more reputable infomercial production companies are refusing to stoop to these new, deceiving lows in sales. This is in part because producers consider the new techniques to be deceptive, and therefore unethical. But the main reason some infomercial companies refuse to partake in the new deception scheme is that most have found that, in the long run, products that employ deceptive marketing never succeed on the scale of their more legitimately marketed counterparts, even if they are good products. This is mostly due to the fact that there is a much smaller demographic that shops from TV shopping networks than the segment that will buy something based on a 30-second spot or one of its longer counterparts.

So if you’re in the exciting position of having to decide how to market your new product on TV, consider going to one of the best infomercial production people so that you’ll be dealing with someone who has the long-term success of your product in mind. You’ll be glad that you did, and – who knows – you may be lucky enough to be maker of the Next Big Thing. Oxyclean, anyone?

kick butt in Dallas

September 5th, 2008

Many people interested in pursuing a martial art like karate or jiu jitsu are discouraged by what seems to be an overwhelming quantity of budget karate academies popping up around the Dallas area. It seems that all you need to open up martial arts schools in Dallas, Texas is a black belt and enough cash to get you through a quick do-it-yourself dojo renovation an a couple months of low revenue. That is to say, it seems that owing to the surge in popularity of martial arts – attributable in no small way to the increased popularity of UFC and mixed martial arts or MMA – a lot of rather unqualified people have gotten into the business of teaching karate – a practice that hurts students as much as it hurts the reputations of the martial arts these teachers claim to teach.

Finding a reputable karate academy in the Dallas area is daunting enough to make you want to avoid pursuing your black-belt dreams altogether. You shouldn’t be discouraged; even though there are dozens of mediocre teachers out there who want nothing more than your money, there are others still that want to see you improve – improve your self-defense skills, improve your fitness, improve your alacrity, improve your self-confidence… in short, improve your life.

Finding a good martial arts school is a lot like finding a good professor. It is important that they be extremely comfortable with the material and know it extremely well; but it is equally important that they are able to convey that knowledge to you in a way that you understand, and that they are able to motivate you not only to attend your classes several times per week, but also that they can motivate you when you’re in class to succeed.

Having detailed the right aspects of a good martial arts instructor, it seems obvious then that the best martial arts school is one that employs teachers with the most experience and has a reputation as one of the better schools. In a way, a good martial arts academy perpetuates its own success by attracting the best talent – teachers who want to work for the academy with the best teachers, much as newly doctored students all want to work at Harvard. So when looking for a place to learn martial arts, remember the three most important things about a martial arts school: experience, experience, experience!
